my two days in iowa.

so i am back. it was a long drive there, and a long drive home. The time there wasnt long, but sufficient of course. I drove alpha and beta rob and eric and erica on friday morn. i think i was called, or rob, at least 10 times, most of which were in teh last 30 minutes of our trip. no joke. they like to stress me out apparently. Fridays rounds went well, the first team was ridiculous, and i played leoo, and i actually did ok, it was definitely fun, something i wasnt quite familiar with before this tournament. Today's leo round was not so hot, at all. I totally freaked out, it may have something to do with the fact that being leo was far far from my mind all moning and definitely all during the lunch break. I was saying one thing and thinking another. argh. I wish i could have had a better run through this afternoon cause i really would like to try being a witness, but then again, there were many times in which i would have killed to have been an attorney as well this weekend... just to object to at least a small portion of the vast quantities of objectionable material that was allowed in at times.
lunch was long. i was pretty relaxed as i ran the ballots back and was sitting alone listening to my ipod for awhile (guster and then the garden state soundtrack). this did not last long. i was eating my amazing veggie wrap and in the midst of it was unable to take another bite due to the horrible feeling in my stomach. i just about puked. talk about a rush of emotion. so lunch went on like this for awhile. but shortly before we left for the second round it was, for the most part chased away because sometimes people are amazing and, well, beyond words i guess... it was exactly what i needed to hear... t created an interesting mood for the afternoon, especially since poor charlie had to just sit there afterward staring at me as i began to cry... but it was all good. we went four and four, both teams we lost our ballots to placed in the top ten i beleive, so that is somewhat reassuring. 696? maybe, well, team death got like 7th or 8th i think. maybe better
last night at the shot tower inn i was able to drink and that was reallly nice, as i have grown very tired of this whole underage thing.
tonight was boring.
ugh.
my tummy hurts, but this time cause i dont feel well. this is much better than the other option.
oh i have issues right now. first of all i think i am slightly unhappy. secondly i am really unsure in life, and confused. and thirdly i wish i could make perfect decisions on everything.
also, i have a crapload to do tomorrow.

your wife is cheating on you.

errr---

"Different students have different reasons for making registration changes; the requirements become unreasonable, the professor shows an ugly side, the material is boring. When asked why she dropped Social Dance during third-week, Ashley Boven, a second-year political science concentrator, said she wanted to spite her roommates, whom she had forced to sign up with her.
'Plus,' she added, 'I was fearful of the social situation in which I had to shake my hips.'"

After a ninth month hiatus from iowa, i am off to the glorious dubuque, be back saturday night.
oh, and clearly by glorious i mean hellhole.

Monday, January 24, 2005

yay, i just realized i was going to be home for the superbowl :)

Sunday, January 23, 2005

meh.

so i definitely feel the exact same way as miss ashley said below. i really want to smile and be happy, but i can't. and today was sunny. i don't know. but tomorrow will be good. there's still a foot of snow on the ground and we're starting 4th week. go school!

murgle.

so. I am really kind of not feeling so well tonight. not physically, like no tummy ache or anything. i just don't really have the happiness blood runnin' through me like I have usually. I don't know what is wrong. I had a good weekend, very chill. I mean, both night were actually quite nice in fact. I playe din teh snow at 3 am on friday and watched the sunrise as well. last night we went to the north side and saw the black ensemble theatre "somebody say amen." it was absolutely amazing. I had my first two cab rides. we have lots of snow. last night was nice after the show as well. ate lots of ice cream. today was uneventful. i made a new friend in my cova class earlier, she's a fourth year, don't how to spell her name, something like jenea? (je-nn-ay, like jac, of jacques). then the scrimmage was delightful. found out i guess i am going to loras. not a bad thing, i heard nick was going, and that makes me happy. but andrew is coming to chicago most likely friday night, and i will miss that, not that i can go anywhere all of them would be going anyway. jason might be coming as well. but i will mis both. i will be home saturday night in time for fun festivities but who knows. i worked out for about and hour and a half after mock, lots of lifting and about 6 miles after that. 5.89 to be exact. i was whipped. then we had apo. then i came home and ate more ice cream. then house stuff. then wasting time in 1227 is for lovers. i made some new door name tags for the new people. brought me back a bit. pictures are getting developed from john's birthday party. that is scary. oh well. abby took down some quotes from me for a maroon article. and i may have said something to the effect of "i would fear shaking my hips in front of so many strangers" and she may be planning to use it. so watch out, he comes ashley the prude and her debut. yeah, right. i can't even force a smile right now. argh, i shall go do work. mommy is coming tomorrow, maybe that will cheer me up. but i guess she is not staying for llong, so maybe not.
well, i guess i am done.

so my mom took the time to take this, and e-mail it to me today. while it is indeed a big improvement for the boven famiy's utensil drawer, picture worthy? hmmm

this is me. this is me on the night before halloween. this is me shortly after being, as i put it at the time, "rescued." oh me.

yes, indeed.

well, the asian has now arrived on the blog again. I actually think this font is serif, but it looks serif when published, oh well. i'm not exactly sure who made ashley queen of the world, again. (she doesn't have class tomorrow....hmph....i'm jealous, to say the least). I find it quite amusing that some people who read this do not know who i am, but that's ok. that's what's fun. well, just wanted to say hey...

that is all.

Grog34 (4:56:17 PM): I saw your blog entitled something and the asian.. and I thought, ohhh, and entry with me in it.. but then I remembered that there are more asians than just me in the world, damn.

stretching and the asian.

what a looong day. up at 8 for astrophysics at 9. andrew and i basically slept for teh majority of the class... we'd wake up now and then to write down random formulas... we might have coherent notes if you merged our notes together. then sosc where the girl decided to disagree with me in a serious way on something that was soooo not controversial, but damn was she pasisonate. i just thoug she was ridiculous though, and i said a few spiteful replies and was finished with her. race and racism was joyous. as always. i spent an hour or so with steven in the c-shop. we wee pretty ridiculous. conversation didnt really exist, we both just sort of sat there in our own little worlds. but it was still nice. then i had my two hour lab with teh girl who fell out of the chair in astro this morning. i like my lab section a lot. and my ta. we did math problems for two hours that would have taken me 20 minutes to do 2 years ago. then i came home. i discussed what makes art art and what good art is with paul on the bus back. also enjoyable. when i came home candace and i left for pierce, and then mock. after mock i drove to ratner, and when i cam eout of ratner it had begun snowing quite a bit. so i drove over back to midway for teh night. i painted until about 11 o'clock and decided to be satisfied. it is due tomorrow... i think i am okay with it for now. tomorrow we start the ultramarine blue, burnt sienna, and white tonal painting. this on was just black and white. that reminds me, i need to look for new still life objects possibly. i have been strecthing canvas for the last little while. i am doing a 20 by 20" this time. a square! how exciting! molto eccitato!
ugh. i ate a lot today. i had tomato soup wen i got home. it was very delicious.
i have so much to do tomrrow, and i know i wont get it all done. i wonder if i shall go home on thursday night. i wish i didnt have social dance on thursdays, and now i cannot missnaother, i shoudl discuss quitting it with teh girls, as i just dont have it in me. i want to go home, i just don't feel like driving. i would really like to spend some time in the zoo for a night or two. i guess i haven't really been gone all that long. this will be my third full week. so maybe i shoudl wait. i don't want to be weird and annoying and go home too much this quarter. i suppose i am going to be spending 10 weeks abroad afer this quarter... so i may have some right to such action. we'll see.
i also really want to watch voices of iraq on friday night. and there was something else friday night that Will mentioned doing that i really wanted to do. hmm. i will have to ponder it tomorrow.
thank goodness i dont have to get up early on wednesdays. mmmmm.... sleeeeeep.

also, today was a just all-around good day. long, buut good. and even the aspects that i would usually find negative about today were even absent from the scene. now time to dream lovely dreams.

Monday, January 17, 2005

errr??

listening to someone who thinks so highly of an another dicuss this person in such a heroic fashion all weekend provided not only for a more than entertaining weekend but also for some very bizarre dreams last night. very.

Sunday, January 16, 2005

i heart everyone.

a lovely weekend. well, i mean, yeah. funny and entertaining if nothing else. at least a rhinocerous didnt get to us on our way their or back. phew. everybody that went this weekend was very easy going and fun, the two teams got along very well... it was nice having such a large group of fresh faces... unsullied and cheerful. i am so tired though. waking up suman this morning was enough energy spent for the whole day in about five minutes. perhaps had i not dragged her along with us to ihop at like 11 last night when she wanted to go to bed, she may have been a bit more pleasant at 6:15 this morning. and i suppose her, tim and i watching about a boy afer we got back was also not the best decision. but we all fell asleep quite quickly.... but luckily not so much that we all woke up with pinched nerves and using my laptop as a pillow form being cramped onto one bed. not that suman and i have ever been forced to have three people in a tiny double bed before. never. o me o my. suman and i just pigged out on half baked ben and jerry's for the last hour or two. delightful indeed. i shoudl go to bed, but i have a write up due tomorrow by noon. and a crapload of painting to accomplish. crap.
moooooooooon riiiiiivvvvvverrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Friday, January 14, 2005

so i realize i am not the first person to feel as though they have endured a near death situation at the red line 55 bus stop, however...

it is very cold outside. in fact, it "feels like" 10 degrees, and everyone knows the red line bus stop for the 55 is always 5 to 10 degrees, if not more, colder than anywhere else. John, Sarah, and I waited for a bus for FIFTY minutes. FIFTY. This is while i had a hole in my butt/thigh area of my jeans about three inches in diameter that basically has provided for the still numb area of my backside even though i have been in the warmth for about an hour now. My fingers have feeling again though, and I can even move them! However, it was worth the trip, well, kind of. I really have never felt so close to dying, like, too much longer and the bus would have found three frozen dead bodies huddled together, and then of course the one crazy bitch who simply couldn’t stop being skeptical of my knowledge of whether or not the bus was still running... can she not read the sign? AND on top of THAT, why the hell would the three of us have been standing there? for fun?? Argh, stupid stupid u of c girl.

So we went and saw Bad Education up at the same theatre in the Belmontish area (its about 5 blocks south of the belmont red line stop) that we saw Hotel Rwanda at. It was also a very good movie, a very different movie than Hotel Rwanda, but still very good. First of it had hot guy, Gael García Bernal from Y Tu Mamá También (also a very very good movie), which was just clearly a good thing. Are there any movies with him and Rodrigo Santoro? That would make my day.

we got milkshakes at Clarke’s, they were quite yummy. we also met these random people on the red line, well, Sarah and i met them, as we kept staring, so they decided to introduce themselves. the four guys went to Columbia college, they kept telling us they were stupid, because the girl they had sat down near was from DePaul, and she said so. and then we had to confess we were from u of c. and then clearly i do need explain anymore of that. But they were very nice and friendly, and the one that first started talking to us was actually quite cute as well. oh randomness. they got off like 5 stops before us though, so then Sarah and i had to continue finding our own entertainment, i do not remember what we did.

it is so cold. i am supposed to keep working on my painting tomorrow. i have NO desire to go over to midway, not even drive to midway... oh but i must... right? i mean, i guess i am going to the NW tourn. this weekend or something, so i won't have time to Sat or Sunday. perhaps i ought to have just donated my car, but i can only really think of one person on the whole mock team who i would let drive my car, and he isn't going this weekend. well, i don't think he is. anyhow, it's a good experience to watch people, you learn something new everyday. did you know that a "sans serif" font is one without serif? which means without things at the ends of each line segment? like this font is serif. my aol font is sans serif:

typeface

Pronounced SAN-SERR-if. A category of typefaces that do not use serifs, small lines at the ends of characters. Popular sans serif fonts include Helvetica, Avant Garde, Arial, and Geneva. Serif fonts include Times Roman, Courier, New Century Schoolbook, and Palatino.

According to most studies, sans serif fonts are more difficult to read. For this reason, they are used most often for short text components such as headlines or captions.

see, now everybody has learned something new today.

oh dear, i still can't feel my left bottom cheek. or thigh. burrrrr! i should get in my covers! i love no class fridays :)

this is all.

happy birthday jon!

today, well tomorrow, is jon's 21st birthday!!! wow... we are getting old.

i dont really have anything to do. i spent all day running around town only to come home empty handed. then i went to mock. then i went to ratner. i worked out until about 10:15. my brother was at volleyball practice so i gave him a ride home.

i have nothing at all remotely interesting to say.

oh, except for the random lee v. discussion. but i am too lazy.

maddy and candace are both in bed and it is only 1 am.

maybe i will just go to bed myself.

dudley house is ridiculous

so it was quite the dudley house weekend. friday was fun, last night was just absurd. while i could never share the details of last night, it was indeed a fun and interesting night. john had his birthday party, i made brownies and this awesome dip and candace and i made ice cream cake for him. everyone on the floor and some others came, we lived it up, dudley style. or at least a lot of us did. and i, ashley marie boven, actually got to aid in putting someone else to bed. there are a lot of cameras i need to throw away i think though. meh. today i woke up and hung out in john's room and we had some birthday cake. today is actually his birthday. then i went to mock. it went well. i came to some miraculous conclusions. then suman and i worked out. i had my apo meeting at 5:30. also enjoyable. then i cam home and took care of a lot of president stuff that i had been putting off. we had a very productiev council meeting, i was very pleased. the house meeting was also good. ben made guacamole. it was good. now i am sitting here.
joy joy.
i handwrote tonights agenda and scanned it and printed out copies. it was all in pink. and then i used my pink feather pen to write and pooint and feel powerful. it was quite a rosy night. maybe i will post the house agenda. i think i will. not that anyone cares. but i'm bored and don;t want to do work. work that i have TONS of. oh me oh my.
i love people.
that is all.

the agenda.

a good night in the land of ashley

what a loooong night. we (candace, john, negin, daniel, sarah, monica, helena, and me) went left fo downtown the north side around 4:30. after taking the 6 to the red line, and the red line to clark, we got off and walked back soth a bit to teh gold coast and ate an italian place that was alright. then we took the 36 to i think diversey. when we got to the theatre as we were waiting in line Hotel Rwanda sold out, and our plan was to go see hotel rwanda and then theatre hop over to Bad Education when it was over. a 2 for 1 special. ha. anyway, so then 6 of us got tickets to teh late showing of Hotel Rwanda and daniel and monica went to see bad education. in teh mean time we wen tshopping (i got an assortment of lip gloss from vicorias secret) and then we went to cold stone creamery and has amaaaaazing ice cream. then we went back and sat in teh theatre for like 20 minues. the movie? incredible. i wasnt breathing for most of it. just amazing. like, everyone just wanted to hug each other as we were leaving (and we did, clearly). then the ride home... oh dear. we had crazy "i know kung fu and have a mother fucking laser" guy in our car on the red line. we had to get off at roosevelt and we made sure when we got on teh next train he wasnt in our car. he was crazy. like totally insane. so we made it home on teh 55 just fine, it actually came rather quickly. there were soem extremely retarded first years that had been waiting for a half hour, i didnt feel bad for them. actually with the levels of maturity at this school, they may as welll have been fourth years, but regardles,s they were annoying. we got home about quarter after two. it was a jolly wonderful 10 hours. so lgald to be home. and warm.
i am eating pizza and drinking pink lemonade. i think the de-tox effects have worn off. i am funcioning normal again, not oober tired pr plagued by a headache. thank goodness.
tomorrows is johns birthday! the people at cold stoen sang him happy birthday tonight, they were entertaining. its quite an adventure there. indeed.
have i mentioned the greatness of the movie? like, negin was almost crying... negin doesnt even have tear ducts! i only cried like mid way throughh, as after that i just couldnt even breat h let alone function in any other way.
also, sometimes i just get really wistfully sad. not very often really. it has happened in like a month or so. but i may have shed a tear or two today when i was out driving this afternoon. i suppose its good for me, shows i am still human. but i just dont really know what sparked it... caus ei dont really even think about most aspects of me like that anymore. well anyway, at least im good for another few months now. i like being solid and cold hearted. independence is the joy of life.
i think candace and i may go watch teh basketball game tomorrow. it would be joyous.
oh i may be tired.

"that girl is such a ..."

i love being me.

Tuesday, January 04, 2005

so i am oober bored

supposedly i should have work to do. but i do not. i mean, i may, but none due tomorrow, actually nothing really tangible at all.
i had all of my real classes today, real meaning not cova or dance, i could never find cova to be anything but something to look forward to. but astrophysics was ridiculous, i got there a half hour late after getting lost (shutup), and the class was just absurd, material wise. like i think i can only hope that it is as ridiculously easy as he made it out to be. but regardless, andrew is in there, and that will keep me entertained, and paula is in there too, as well as HRH. fun fun. then i have sosc, sarah old me this great story about her break that really reminded me of myself. she is fabulous. then i had race and racism in the americas. i think i will enjoy it. lots of reading. but good. also, i have teh oppurtunity to be done with winter quarter on march 8. and i plan to take advantage of this. that would leave me a good amount of time at home before italy. over two weeks in fact. oh my mom would love me. and i would love me.
oh italy. how i plan to love thee.
today was a good day. i wasted my afternooon away with maddy and candace, and then had mock, which turned out to be a very good time to be had by all.
orange bowl was on, turne dout to be an awful game. i mean, yay for usc, but absolutely not exciting. but we watche dit anyway. and then we didnt do work afterwards either. i still dont think any of us are doing work. there was an underwear party in dudley house this evening. and underwear cereal and study party in fact.
also, i just am so happy to have room 1224 baack in full swing. i miss home though. i grew attached again. why can't i go back to the old days of kalamazoo being poison? like last winter break? but no. it makes me very happy. the people and the places. argh matey. stupid "kalamazoo," i doubt it really even is a real place. oh, but it is.
so, big news. after another crazy eart attack anxiety crazy ashley cant breath or walk episode today, it has been decided that the caffeein aspect of my life must be chopped. i drank my last drink of pop for an undertermined amount of time this evening, at the recomendation of my mother, and because i just love making declarations. hopefully she'll consider holding up her end of the deal...

also:
AndyA5410 (12:25:21 AM): i'm pretty sure that you should have some kind of diploma
AndyA5410 (12:25:26 AM): that isn't from a high school

my favorite personal quote of my own of the evening, "thank god my kids won't be having those genes"

and then my mother asking what i meant with the quote at the bottom of one of my recent blogs. because i suppos eit did sound quite serious, but it was actually a very humorous and delightful comment. but i suppose miss wang will be the sole understander of it for the sake other people's self esteem.

oh even this is boring me this evening! i guess i should just go to bed.
hmph.

this was in a bathroom stall in buenos aires, argentina. Argentina! i clearly live in the greatest city on earth.

Monday, January 03, 2005

a mellow day indeed.

i really do love the garden state soundtrack.

Sunday, January 02, 2005

as close to normal as its gonna get...

it feels soo wonderful to have jon and candace back in the house... well, it just feels great to have everyone back really. it was a wonderful day, long, very long, but good. i just finished watching anchorman and then napoleon dynamite with the house... when i returnd to my computer napoleon dynamite had asked me to be his facebook friend... it was kind of strange. if anyone is thinking, "i hope she really doesnt think napoleon dynamite really is on the facebook," gs people. we called joe tonight. we talke dto his mom. we tried to get jon to ask for joe in spanish butu he didnt. it all worked out, but he wasnt home. lily didnt answer either.
classes tomorrow... yuck. only one though, and its painting, i suppose it can't possibly be all that painful. on the contrary, it should be quite the opposite.
every noticed how much more fun it is to listen to sad or melancholy music when you are really happy with yourself and life? and how happy and upbeat music is even more happy and smile-inducing? well, maybe its just me, but i certainly think so.
also, i may have talked more today than i talked all last quarter. sometimes i think i just like to know and test that i have the ability to speak.
oh joy.

"i always just kept saying, 'oh, it will be okay, it will changeand get better in time...' and then one day i realized time was passing but it wasn't changing anything, and it wasn't okay at all."

Saturday, January 01, 2005

i havent felt like this in so many moons...

so, this is my 19th time seeing another year come to pass. i will be twenty years old in just four full months. this is absolutely amazing to me... i remember turning ten years old as if it was last week. I was so damn excited about double digits... and now i have doubled that! it amazes me really. but for now i shall not think about my birthday or losing my title as a teenager, as that is a long time away and i wont even be in this country.
oh i am optmistic for the year ahead. i don't have any expectations or anything, i just pray to god to keep a low profile and low level of excitement and drama. i dont think it could possibly be difficult to have less than last year. i wont be eating meat for one thing! i am so thrilled about this resolution, as i know i will keep it. i have already decided that if it would be annoying to my host family i will eat meat while there, as that would be rude, but for the most part i doubt i will miss it, i have never much appreciated large hunks of meat anyway (excpet for that damn good steak i grilled 4th or 5th week). (actually it had to have been like 6th or 7th week). (maybe later even).

i am returning to chicago tomorrow. i have not yet packed, and my do i have a lot to gather up. but i hope to be there by mid to late afternoon. i think john is supposed to be back, it would be nice to have some relaxing time before everyone else gets back... i pick candace up sunday morning from o'hare and jon is living in dudley house again with geoff! oh what a wonderful quarter this will be. speaking of jon, he did indeed call me around 2 tonight, clearly a drunk dial, i think it was shocking to him that i was not out partying nor drunk, but this seems to be how most of my new years tend to roll. there was the joyous new years eve 2001 when the Al letter was written by heba and myself. a few new years with just my parents... well, not that my parents haven't had their share of crazy new years eve parties... every year up until i was like 8 years old we had so many strangers in our house on new years you would have thought my parents were like frat brothers or something. i never partied on new years in high school, always a quiet night in with my boy, or heba. movies and carson and dick clark, its the way ashley way i guess.
meh, it was a very enjoyable night. andrew and i went and saw finding neverland, it was very good. quiet and nice, just the way i hope the year goes.

well i shoudl get some sleep if i intend to get up at a decent hour to pack.

happy new year!
